Since contributing memorable vocals to Rudimental’s ‘Spoons’, 20-year-old singer-songwriter Daisy Tallulah Syron-Russell has seen no little buzz turn her way.
She’s now signed with Black Butter Records, who’re behind her catchy new single ‘Here’ (video below). Of the single, she says: “It’s about when you’re busy or travelling, and you’re here for your friends. I guess mine have been a big influence. Musically, it’s a poppy track, but it’s got house influences, and a bit of reggae as well.”
The south Londoner takes these styles and infuses them with influences from her childhood: the likes of TLC, Destiny’s Child and Aaliyah. “And then, when I was older, I started going to garage nights,” she adds. “I was still using someone else’s passport, to get in. I went to bashment nights, too, in Brixton.”
A product of the prestigious BRIT School, Syron is open about the expectations associated with such an education. “Everyone there wants to do well, so it’s kind of competitive. You’re friends with everyone, but you all want to do the best. So I think you do put pressure on yourself.”
Today, she’s certainly dressed for success, from her peroxide crop to her Buffalo shoes, and her debut album’s in the works. “I’ve been working with MNEK, MJ Cole, Huxley and TCTS,” she says of her long-player collaborators.
Exuding an attractive assertiveness, it’s clear that Syron has a vision for her music. ‘Here’ is a statement – to friends, to fans, and to newcomers alike. She’s here to stay, no matter what.
