Good Trip, Bad Trip: Pond

Perth-based rockers on their road trips…
POND

Good Trip, Bad Trip asks our favourite musicians about their touring lifestyle, and the highs and lows that come with it. Along the way, hopefully we’ll all learn a little something, and maybe even have a laugh.

This time, it’s the turn of Perth, Australia’s Pond, whose live take on ‘Colouring The Streets’ we premiered just the other day. The band’s ‘Hobo Rocket’ album was a domestic top-40 hit in the summer of 2013, and a new set is on the way. Guitarist and co-vocalist Joe Ryan is on answering duty…

Best Trip…

“Probably my favourite trip with Pond – aside from the occasional backyard ones in our old shared house in Perth – was when we toured America and Canada in 2012. We went over to play South By Southwest in Austin and ended up playing about eight shows in five days before setting off on a four-week tour around the rest of the country. We were like a little unit engaged in guerrilla warfare. We’d arrive at the venue and set up, then we'd get our two free beers from the bar (both at the same time) and play before disappearing into the crowd again to go set up and play somewhere else. Very, very fun.”

Worst Trip…

“The worst trip has just come to an end about an hour ago. We drove from Italy to Porto in a sardine can that took about 30 hours non-stop. It’s a nine-seater bus with nine coffin-sized bunks and a sticker over the engine heat gauge because it’s always on. When we got to Portugal we played a ripper show at Primavera Porto but had to leave after our show and before Shellac! Only to drive another 30 hours to England to play Field Day. Epic trip, and takes the cake for me at the moment as worst trip. Only the driving bit though. It’s sunny and hot here in England so I can’t complain anymore. Next tour is going to be called the ‘No More Buses Tour’.”

Our favourite foreign venue…

“It’s hard to say which is my favourite foreign venue but I’m going to choose the Bowery Ballroom in New York. Only because as we walked out onto stage I said into the mic, in a completely appropriate and justifiable way (if we were in Australia), ‘How ya going, c*nts?’ In Australia, c*nt is a word you say to a friend, a term of endearment if you will, and in no way meant as a sexist or derogatory comment (most of the time). Also, in Australia if someone is pissing you off, you call them ‘mate’. For example, if you were going to slog someone you’d say, ‘Look mate, you’re going to get one right in the eye in a minute.’ Backwards and crazy I know. So the audience at the Bowery were stunned silent. I, however, thought they didn’t hear me so I said it again. They had in fact heard me the first time.”

We’re surprisingly popular in…

“Ireland? We haven’t played there as Pond yet so I’m going by what I hear from my family there. Also, we seem to have a lot of fans in South America, which again we haven’t visited yet as Pond.”

Best or worst exotic foodstuff…

“Pizza, for both. I’ve had some amazing pizza around the world, and the worst in Sydney.”

Most interesting individual you've met on the road…

R. Stevie Moore. We met him the other day at a festival in Switzerland and he’s a great chap. We all love his music by the way, so we were a bit star struck when he came up to Nick, Jamie and I and said, ‘Where’s Pond?’”

Worst on-tour injury, or accident…

“Probably the worst injury on tour occurred in Vancouver, Canada where I was drunkenly jumping around from bed to bed doing flips and stuff like that. I over estimated the flip and hit my heel on the radiator under the window. I couldn’t walk for days. The pain lasted for about another month after that.”

My essential travel item…

“Money. We usually have zero.”

My essential travel tip...

“Drink plenty of water, and wrap your lunch.”
