Electric Selection – Wraetlic

Blurred vocal twilight techno from Alex Smoke

Warped, claustrophobic and subterranean, Alex Smoke has surfaced from his hiatus with a new nom-de-guerre in the form  of his wraith-like ‘Wraetlic’ guise. Here we witness him delving even further into his blurred vocal twilight techno. And he’s thriving on lonely introspection: “I’m fascinated by the sense of separation between ourselves and society,” explains the usually furtive producer, “and a sense that it doesn’t represent us… There’s also a more personal strand to do with my own relationships.”

Damning money and modern politics, Smoke has his sights set on electronic music with an agenda. He seethes at American foreign policy by sampling G.W. Bush before climbing into his own metaphysical carcass to study the skies on his own terms. The producer bares his soul about failed relationships on ‘Scunner’ and ‘Anothering’ whilst revealing yet more flesh for us to get our hands on when he says: “The last couple of years have been annoyingly marred by health issues,” he confesses. “I couldn't work nearly as much as I’d  normally like. I had composed ‘Faust’  but had then had a long time not being able to write much, so when I could work again I suddenly felt a new lease of life, a feeling which I hadn’t had since my early days. I think the time away from working probably did me good in hindsight.”

So step into the mists of Wraetlic: he’s got enough existential agony to power your dancing soul for a decade more.
