ClashMusic DJ Mix Podcast - WIFE

Sparse and creeping guitar pluckings, with haunted tortured electronic strata thrive under the spectral vocals of James Kelly. This textural chameleon is the mind behind Irish black metal band Altar of Plagues and whilst WIFE tears off in a more club cultural direction expect nothing less than fanatical levels of composition.

Tri-Angle have stepped in to release WIFE’s first LP as Left Blank continue to feed those around them. His ‘Stoic’ EP gathered up everything involved in the vogue of gothic and re-arranges it with deeper drones, more stifled pain and a scintillating dose of existential agony. Disorientating alternative pop never sounded this beguiling.

Here we catch up with Kelly to delve deep into his love of living on the left.

What attracted you to working with left-blank?

Firstly their musical output and aesthetic. Later the people, the vision, and the ambition. Considering the challenging nature of much of the output, I think it is an admirably courageous label.

What makes it unique?

An unwillingness to compromise their vision and tastes in the interest of a consistent release schedule. It seems to me that the trajectory has curved since the earliest releases. I find labels with a subtle consistency but unpredictable nature to be the most exciting.

I am also continually impressed with their knowledge of the music (for want of a better word) 'industry'. For a label reaching only its sixth release, the persons operating Left_Blank are more knowledgeable than any of the major label persons I have met.

How do you feel about your fellow artists on the imprint?

I find them all inspirational. Each is unique in their own right yet there is a common thread throughout. And we all share a love for aural oddities.

How would you describe the label’s over arching sound?

Irregular yet visceral. Subdued and captivating… The early releases seemed to be on the edge of the dance floor. The new ones are being played in a car in the parking lot.

How would you describe your own output?

I think 'electronica' is a broad enough to cover it. I don't think what I make sits comfortably in any one stylistic box. What I make is informed by a massive variety of alien to electronic sounds, regurgitated in the electronic realm. I also want the music I make to have some emotive depth.

WIFE performs his debut live set at the next EAST NOT EAST event on Friday 16th November. Also appearing live is Throwing Snow and DJ sets from Hyetal, Young Echo and a secret guest. Find out all at the Facebook Event page here.
