For this week’s Clash DJ podcast, FaltyDL puts together a laid-back electronic workout that quietly sinks in its teeth whenever you relax too much.
The New York-based producer (Andrew Lustman) is known for his refreshingly unpredictable approach, often blending garage, classic house and glitchy textures, and just as likely to go down the experimental, tempo-shredding route as he is to craft colourful, cerebral electronica, the latter of these guises shining through on latest album ‘Hardcourage’, his first full-length release on Ninja Tune after signing to the label last year.
And if you’re wondering what inspired FaltyDL to craft this particular mix, you might be surprised: “I made this mix in my friend’s basement in London, surrounded by loads of jazz and soul records. Although they didn’t seem to influence it at all. [There was] lots of tea and an electronic cigarette.”
There’s no tracklist for this one – Falty was too busy brewing and e-smoking to note all the tracks down – but as you’d expect, there’s a wide range of sounds on there, taking in chugging electronica, Chicago-dipped house, leftfield club gems and uplifting garage, with a few unexpected direction shifts. And despite what he says, we feel there’s actually a dash of soul present on a few tracks, adding yet more colour to a rich and rewarding mix.
‘Hardcourage’ is out now on Ninja Tune.
