With a few notable exceptions, losing things is usually bad. But when New Young Pony Club recently lost the four cumbersome words that made up their moniker and trimmed down to the snappier NYPC, it brought with it a new musical identity, as well as this deliciously deep disco mix put together for Clash.
Though retaining some elements of their post-punky ways, the rejuvenated and streamlined NYPC – now consisting just of Andy Spence and Tahita Bulmer – have shed their indie-funk image and embraced the new wave and electronic aspects of their sound, finding a home in stripped-back, catchy dance grooves with their recent self-titled album.
It’s this side of NYPC that we hear at play on their Clash mix, which burrows into deep disco, glittery house and cosmic funk. Along the way is a rather lush dub of the duo’s own ‘Now I’m Your Gun’, John Talabot and Pional’s vocal-led beauty ‘Destiny’ and three home runs in a row from Factory Floor, Daniel Avery and Metro Area.
That’ll do very nicely indeed, thanks. So let’s embrace NYPC’s new grooves and forget about the ponies – when was the last time you heard a horse lay down a solid disco jam, anyway?
