One of techno’s undisputed masters takes us on a live space-funk odyssey for the latest Clash DJ Mix. Strap yourself in: it’s Carl Craig at the controls.
Often name-checked as the pack leader when talk of Detroit’s ‘second wave’ of producers comes up, Craig’s contributions to techno and electronic music as a whole have been invaluable.
Whether it’s the otherworldly electronics of his 69 project, casually kick-starting D&B through his jazz and breaks outfit Innerzone Orchestra, or the vast back catalogue of futuristic techno explorations under his own name, Craig’s place in the history books of electronic music was assured long ago.
For his Clash DJ Mix, we delve into one of the producer’s revered live sets, taken from a recent show at London basement club Plastic People. Craig goes in deep and funky from the start, voyaging through starry-eyed techno, dubbed-out house, spacey jazz jams and just a hint of machinist Detroit, building the atmosphere as only he knows how and giving just a glimpse into the workings of a truly advanced musical mind.
Check the mix out, do – it’s just up there.
