“A rowdy, rowdy mix through and through, guaranteed to rip, tear and shred the club up” is how this week’s artist, Aaron LaCrate, describes his heavyweight selection. And you know what? He might just have put together a mix that’s ballsy enough to do just that.
The bass-delving hip hop producer, DJ, fashion designer and film maker has put together an exclusive ‘Bodymore’ mixtape, named after the grim moniker given to Baltimore, due to its excessive bodycount. But this is no macabre tribute – LaCrate is a Baltimore boy through-and-through, with the city shaping both his music and popular clothing line.
As you might have guessed, hard-hitting, raw and gritty hip hop is the pristine prime ingredient in LaCrate’s mix, alongside some breaks, trap and a few bassier flavours.
Here’s what LaCrate had to say about the mix: “I recorded this in a dark basement with lots of bass. The mood of the mix is pure head-nodding kaos. I was aiming to fuck your head up. I chose the tracks ‘cuz they’re lethal.
“To put it simply I grew up in the hood, the East Baltimore neighbourhood of Highlandtown, right up the block from the gutter. These are the sounds of Aaron LaCrate and Bodymore City. Mostly produced by me, mixed in with some of my Baltimore favourites. A rowdy, rowdy mix through and through, guaranteed to rip, tear and shred the club up just enough to might get you hooked on the Aaron LaCrate Gutter Crack. The first hit is free, baby…”
