With Marlena Shaw and Jazzanova

Bulleit Originals returns to Scotland this month, once more treating audiences to a thrilling musical extravaganza and history lesson all rolled into one.

Brought to you by the nice folks at Bulleit Bourbon, the event, at The Caves in Edinburgh on January 30th, features a stellar line-up that brings together some of the most influential soul and funk artists of the past with the cream of today’s crop.

Headlining the night will be original soul legend Marlena Shaw. Perhaps best known for the hit singles ‘California Soul’ and ‘Touch Me In The Morning’, Marlena was the first female vocalist signed to Blue Note Records, and her career has spanned over forty years, including recording and touring with the likes of Rat Pack star Sammy Davis Jr., as well as Ray Brown and Benny Carter. Shaw’s undoubted pedigree means she is still just as popular today, and recently she has been remixed by modern luminaries DJ Shadow, Diplo and Adam Freeland.

If Marlena represents a slice of history, then the soul jazz spunds of Jazzanova should bring things up to the present day, mixing vocal features with old-school grooves and soul-jazz flourishes. As well as an album of their own, ‘Of All The Things’, due for release soon, Jazzanova have remixed the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Marschmellows, Ian Pooley, Incognito, 4Hero, M.J. Cole and Masters At Work to name but a few.

Bringing a bit of Scottish Soul to the night will be Edinburgh’s own retrofuturist-broken-soul-funk duo, Digital Jones, who will be looking to open proceedings with a bang. DJ support is provided by electro-funk legend Greg Wilson, who has created a special ‘Tribute to Soul’ set to bridge the gap between old and new and fill any gaps in people’s musical education.
