Track Of The Day 9/12 - Poly Styrene

Punk Icon Gets Festive

Punk has never exactly got into the Christmas spirit.

John Lydon's withering assault 'Religion' means that Public Image Limited probably won't be sloping away from their tour dates for a little festive shopping. Yet Poly Styrene appears to be preparing for the big day, just don't expect much festivity.

As the lead singer with X Ray Spex Poly Styrene crafted some vital music. Scoring a genuine hit with 'Germ Free Adolescents' the band mixed punk, dub and free jazz, somehow taking this mixture into the charts.

Releasing some challenging material, Poly Styrene's unusual fashion sense saw her mix punk imagery with discarded plastics. Remaining a challenging artist, the singer recently returned to the recording studio.

Working with Youth (Killing Joke, Paul McCartney) the punk star laid down a number of tracks. Her debut solo album, the new material finds Poly Styrene on typically withering form laying into a number of targets.

'Generation Indigo' is set to be released next year, with Poly Styrene previewing the album with the release of single 'Black Christmas'. Recorded with her daughter, the track was inspired by news reports about an American serial killer dressed as Santa Claus, and references the recession.

It's a black Christmas...
