Track Of The Day 8/3 - Tall Ships

Brighton Based Newcomers

2010 was the year guitar music seemed to curl up in a corner and fall asleep.

Innovation seemed thin on the ground, with the mainstream turning its back on the standard indie sound. However out on the margins a series of groups are undertaking bizarre experiments on guitar music.

Hailing from Cornwall but forming in Brighton, Tall Ships have impressed with the pyrotechnics of their live show. The band went down the standard Green Day cover route in their teens, before having their minds blown by groups such as American math rock titans Battles.

Re-assessing how they make music, the trio began exploring new avenues. A support slot with 65daysofstatic opened them up to electronics, with the Sheffield group's seal of approval introducing them to countless new fans.

Since then, the band have released two sterling EPs. On record, Tall Ships are a blizzard of barely containable ideas. Rhythms shift, tempos alter and guitars scream for their life as the band chafe against the margins of the song.

New single 'Plate Tectonics' is a case in point. Initially recorded for an independent compilation last year, Tall Ships have re-visited the track. Adding some severe muscle, the guitars sound as if they have had an injection of steroids.

Released as a new tour dawns, the joint dates with Three Trapped Tigers united two of the country's most forward thinking guitar bands.
