Track Of The Day 3/4 - OFF!

For some, the recession has exposed a failure in modern music.

Where are the political tracts, the protest songs, the howls of the disenfranchised? Yet maybe those people are missing the point. There's a generation of kids who don't have the money to party, who just want to set up in their garage, invite along their friends and kick out some righteous jams fit to upset the neighbours.

It's a hardcore resurgence. Retro, for sure, but then Hardcore fizzled out way to soon, eclipsed by boneheads, knuckleheads and douchebags.

So it's probably pertinent that OFF! are around to unite those twin generations. The Los Angeles based quartet contain former members of Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Rocket From The Crypt, Redd Kross and more, but this isn't a case of experience equating to wisdom.

Debut album 'First Four EPs' is almost ludicrously brief. Sixteen songs in sixteen minutes, it seems to doff its cap to the glory days of when punk groups would hone their chops on the road and then lay down material in a speed-addled blitz out.

A frenzy of attitude, sweat and punk ass ranting, OFF! have a party edge which sits apart from the angst. Full throttle Hardcore delights, 'First Four EPs' is set to drop in May - accompanied by some rare UK shows.

With that in mind, here's 'King Kong Brigade'. Just a tad over 90 seconds long, OFF! manage to stretch time - doing more with that minute and a half than some bands do with their entire career.

A side-swipe at American society, 'King Kong Brigade' rants against the "cream rising to the top". The rich get richer and the poor... form Hardcore bands.
