Track Of The Day 29/6 - Cheatahs

At first glance, London can appear vast, enormous, imposing.

The reality, though, is that the metropolis is really just a series of interlocking villages. And see the people in those villages? Everyone knows everyone.

Take East London. A fashionable, creative part of town it has fostered a fine line in noisy, gnarly, proto-Grunge over the past few years. Now Cheatahs have emerged, with links to seemingly every band under the sun.

Nathan Hewitt plays guitar in Male Bonding. James Wignall used to be in Weird Dreams. Cheatahs are even signed to label of the moment Marshall Teller, who excel in that modern slacker ethos.

Not that Cheatahs are distracted from their mission. “This is definitely not a side project of any kind,” they insist. “We would all call this band our only one.”

That much is evident on the band's new EP 'Coared'. Arriving remarkably fully formed, Cheatahs have supplied fans with a new four part dose of noisey, tattered pop songs.

All frays around the edges, Cheatahs are like that cassette you'd forgotten all about. Lying at the back of the box you have to tease the reel back into place with a biro, before playing something decaying, degraded, striking.

Stand out cut 'Ripper' is a case in point. All rattlesmashcrash it's over in 120 seconds - in / out, no mess / no fuss.

Listen to it now...

Cheatahs are set to launch their new EP at London venue the Shacklewell Arms tonight (June 29th).
