I Need A Dollar

American imprint Stones Throw might have a reputation for groundbreaking hip hop, but the label is capable of throwing a few curve balls.

Take Aloe Blacc. An acclaimed rapper, the Southern Californian artist recently decided to stretch his vocal chords and return as a gutsy soul singer. Indebted to greats such as Otis Redding and Eddie Floyd, his R&B sound owes more to Stax than it does to Beyonce.

Returning with his second album, Aloe Blacc is beginning to enjoy wider praise. 'Good Things' sees the singer unite with his backing band known as The Expressions or El Michels Affair, producing some explosive recordings.

Of course, nothing soulful can avoid the stigma of being retro, but Aloe Blacc seems to embue his work with a certain charisma, a style of personality which prevents 'Good Things' being a mere retread of past glories.

Lead single 'I Need A Dollar' became the theme tune of 'How To Make It In America' marking Aloe Blacc's biggest exposure to date. An irresistible slice of funky soul, the track is now available as a free download.

Obviously in a generous mood, the good folks at Stones Throw have decided to re-release the single for gratis, free, nothing.
