Track Of The Day 28/10 - Thavius Beck

Flying Lotus On Remix Duties

The City Of Angels is a relentless musical force, and today’s track of the day unites two of Los Angele’s finest purveyors of skewed electronica, as Thavius Beck’s ‘Away’ gets a once-over from Flying Lotus.

An endless pressure of layered, echoed vocals plug any empty space that might have been found between the cracked brittle beats, and the dark horror movie aesthetic that runs throughout allows you barely any room to breathe. No bass at all, you’re pushed along by the chase-scene tempo of it all, compounded by Beck’s wraithlike pleas to escape.

Awesome stuff by both artists, and for the remainder of the day only, available as a free download on ClashMusic.com.

‘Away’ features on Thavius Beck’s latest solo full-length, titled ‘Dialogue’, on the Big Dada label. His influences of prog and jazz-rock, soul and funk, roots reggae, older hip hop, are contorted as the impression made by the more electronic experimental sounds of industrial and drum ‘n’ bass shows through.

The red-blooded production serves as the platform for Beck to convey his lyrics which he deems to be meaningful and sincere, “I’m of the opinion that if you have a platform to say something, don’t just say some bullshit. Use that platform to say something worthwhile – it doesn’t have to always be ultra conscious or serious, but if every song you make is about bitches, cars and drugs, you either live a very empty life or you’re a huge liar”. Words of the wise.
