It's been a big week for Datarock.

The Norwegian group are renowned for their conceptual bent, attaching some outlandish ideas to their catchy-as-hell brand of synth pop. But this time, the hooded beatsmiths could well have outdone themselves.

Datarock decided that the current attitude to formats was out-dated. As a result, the band opted to experiment with their new single 'The Catcher In The Rye'. A bass laden slice of 80s inspired electro-pop, the track was given an extravagant release.

Held in a specially designed container, the band prepared a USB stick containing 110 new tracks, 30 music videos, 1500 photographs and more.

A document of their recent world tour, the single is out now. Not content with that, Datarock have now surprised fans by announcing details of a new musical inspired in part by their own career.

Due to be released later this year, it features two friends growing up in a nowhere town. Forming a band, they head to Los Angeles to make their fortune before coming unstuck. Will it all end happily ever after?

Taken from the musical, Datarock's surprise new EP 'California' is out now. A glimpse of a much larger project, the Norwegian group have no plans to rein in their ever fertile imagination.

ClashMusic has grabbed 'The Catcher In The Rye' as a free download.
