Battles

As Shakespeare once asked, what's in a name?
The word Barbarossa contains within it some strong connotations. Hitler's code name for the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, it triggered one of the bloodiest conflicts in human history. On a more mundane level, though, the phrase translates to 'red beard' in Italian.
Barbarossa also acts as the moniker for James Mathé. There are few Second World War battles in sight, with the emerging songwriter preferring to focus on inner conflict rather than a real life blood bath.
Gradually gaining a cult following, previous releases have seen Barbarossa secure partnerships with Rough Trade. Now at home on Scottish label / cottage industry Fence, the songwriter recently pieced together a new EP.
Looking ahead, Barbarossa is planning his next step. Working on a full length album, Clash have been handed an intimate preview.
Stripped from the in-progress LP, 'Battles' opens with the crackle of home made electronics before the guitar led arpeggios gently feel their way in. James Mathé has an odd, keening voice which flirts with the upper register while maintaining the impact of a growling baritone.
Soft without becoming gentle, quiet without becoming a whisper his delivery matches words which are obviously painstakingly (in every sense of the word) thought out.
There's a folk influence here, but only in the sense of being true to who you are. Fortunately for James Mathé, who he is remains obscure, difficult to penetrate. It's a puzzle, for sure, but one well worth persisting with.
