Track Of The Day 19/8 - Luke Temple

Joyous Acoustic Abandon

Funny how art and music link together.

The British art school tradition propelled rock music forward, while many songwriters have a dual living as an artist. Struggling to gain recognition from his musical output, Luke Temple decided to make a living by painting murals in the homes of wealthy Boston residents.

Allowing the singer breathing space, his band Here We Go Magic won acclaim for their 2009 debut album. Western Vinyl handled the release, with Luke Temple's songwriting winning some admiring glances.

Returning to his solo guise, the songwriter began sketching out new ideas last year. Focussing on an Americana influence, Luke Temple has returned with a jaunty, buoyant almost throwaway collection of songs.

The tempo is lifted, with Temple imparting a country lilt on proceedings. 'Don't Act Like You Don't Care' contains some lovelorn anthems, with the songwriter moving away from Here We Go Magic's hazy psychedelia.

Not exactly stripped back, 'Don't Act Like You Don't Care' makes use of simple instrumentation. Luke Temple is often accompanied by little more than an acoustic guitar, with the music fleshed out by a handful of guest musicians.

Allowing the songs space to stand or fall on their own merits, Luke Temple has constructed something very personal and deeply impressive.

Out now, ClashMusic has managed to grab hold of 'Ophelia' as a free download. Taken from the new album, it finds Luke Temple intoning some poetic lyrics over a breezy acoustic backdrop.
