Eleventh Hour

“I kept playing with a lot of boys but it wasn’t for me,” says Faith Holgate impishly. She’s the frontwoman of the much blogged about female four-piece, PINS. Not wanting to be “the token girl in any boy band,” she recruited the other three. Early gigs have been awash with an amalgamation of reverb, guitar-fuzz, and brazen self-assurance.
‘Eleventh Hour’ is band’s first official video and an accompanying limited-edition cassette sold out in three hours. “We’d sold a few to friends and in the end we had to say ‘sorry mate but you can’t have one. We need to sell them to actual people,’ she laughs. The darkly-textured atmosphere within the track mirrors Faith’s cathartic writing experience. “I didn’t realise at the time but it reflects on what I was going through. I never realised how therapeutic music could be. The whole theme of the song is about being in a turbulent relationship and questioning your role in life.”
Seeing the final video was another emotional experience, despite the cool image displayed with it Faith confesses: “It was amazing moment. We all cried. The song was recorded half in our practice room and half in our bass player’s cupboard so to see it all come together was great.”
The video was picked up by lots of bloggers, drawing comparisons to the likes of Crystal Stilts and Dum Dum Girls . Faith herself cites different references. “I would never have made a band if it wasn’t for the ‘90s Riot Grrrl thing because that was what I was into, and we don’t really do it in that style but it’s definitely an influence.”
The girls are have a slot confirmed supporting Best Coast in Wales and tonight they’re playing a New Sounds Of The North gig in a disused office block in their hometown. They’ve come out of the cupboard to use a studio in Wales too. The fruits of these sessions are set to form an EP or split single later in the year.
