A new spirit has been trickling through Grime of late.

A new wave of producers are re-interpreting what can be done at 140, adding new elements and stripping others away. Hailing from Doncaster, Mella Dee is part of this, stamping his own identity on the sound.

Which isn't to suggest that Mella Dee only makes Grime. Recent EPs with Coyote, Unknown To The Unknown, Cheap Thrills and Greenmoney have showcased a producer who isn't afraid to stretch himself.

Take new EP 'Ruff Cut'. Out next month on Forefront Recordings, Mella Dee playfully toys with Garage rhythms while inserting subtle nods to House greats.

Opening cut 'Gassed' is by far the most raucous. The first few seconds are given over to Crazy Titch’s infamous cab driver incident before the percussive edge seeps through. Heavy and hard-hitting, 'Gassed' stands in contrast to the slinky UK Garage of 'Fazed'.

All bump 'n' grind and liquid rhythms, 'Fazed' has a much more solid edge than its predecessors. For our latest Track of the Day, though, we've gone for something slightly different. A vinyl only cut, 'In The Bits' has a driving, forward moving beat that almost sits on four to the floor.

Verging on House, the coloured textures bring something new flushing out of Mella Dee's production.
