Delia Derbyshire's music didn't top any charts.
In fact, for most of her life the composer was barely even credited. Yet Derbyshire's music, it's pervasive effect on popular culture, have left a profound, lingering legacy.
A member of the Radiophonic Workshop, Delia Derbyshire's work with the BBC resulted in some iconic, ground-breaking music. Responsible for the Doctor Who theme, the composer's work grasped technological innovations without losing sight of her sublime grasp of musical concepts.
Joyous experiments in sound, Delia Derbyshire's work received renewed prominence during the 90s. Helping to inspire artists such as Aphex Twin and Belbury Poly, the composer was even coaxed back into the studio.
"Working with people like Sonic Boom on pure electronic music has re-invigorated me" she said at the time. "He is from a later generation but has always had an affinity with the music of the 60s. One of our first points of contact - the visionary work of Peter Zinovieff, has touched us both, and has been an inspiration. Now without the constraints of doing 'applied music', my mind can fly free and pick-up where I left off."
Sadly passing away in 2001, Delia Derbyshire's work continues to inspire. 'Nightwalker' is a two minute sketch, all primordial synths lumbering over prepared sound.
