Stream: Father John Misty - Fear Fun

Josh Tillman unveils solo project...
"It’s all of me and none of me, if you can’t see that, you won’t get it".

Josh Tillman is racked with contradictions - perhaps that's why he uses a Philip Roth quote to illuminate his new project. A respected songwriter in his native Seattle, the artist only came to wider attention via his role with Fleet Foxes.

Perched on the drum stool between 2008 - 2011, Tillman was also stockpiling solo material. Departing from Fleet Foxes last year, the songwriter hoisted the Father John Misty moniker and began work on a new album.

A sprawling, ambitious, imaginative work Father John Misty's 'Fear Fun' veers between heart-on-sleeve poetics and some genuinely strange, surreal moments. Always a vivid, engrossing experience, Josh Tillman recently underlined his intention to fulfil an escapist drive.

"I see a lot of rampant, sexless, male-fantasy everywhere in the music around me. I didn’t want any alter-egos, any vagaries, fantasy, escapism, any over-wrought sentimentality. I like humour and sex and mischief" he explained. "So when you think about it, it’s kind of mischievous to write about yourself in a plain-spoken, kind of explicitly obvious way and call it something like ‘Misty’. I mean, I may as well have called it ‘Steve’”.

Set to be released on April 30th, you can stream 'Fear Fun' in its entirety a week early on ClashMusic.
