With Richard Hawley, The Magnetic Fields

It's a fine May day here made better by the fact that i can finally say "Richard Hawley's 'Leave Your Body Behind' is single of the week". Yes I like it that much.

In other news I also listened to new releases by Kasabian, Gossip, Band Of Skulls and The Magnetic Fields (which would've been SotW if not for Sir Hawley).

Richard Hawley – 'Leave Your Body Behind'

Yes indeed, a bit of a sea change from his recent 50s throwback balladeering, 'Leave Your Body Behind' sees Hawley get murky. And heavy. And trippy. And...you get the idea. With his formidable axe skills centre stage, this is a reinvention (and yes I know he's not always been the sedate new music 'your dad can appreciate') I can get behind.

Gossip – 'Perfect World'

Ah it's Gossip (no 'The' you see) so on a scale of one to ten how much does it remind you of 'Standing In The Way Of Control'? Well you see, it doesn't! So it kinda doesn't sound like them, except for Beth's (aka THE) voice. It's alright but sounds a bit slick being produced, as it is, by the guy who twiddles Girls Aloud's knobs.

Kasabian – 'Man Of Simple Pleasures'

Ooh fourth single off the album, you're outta here! Nah but really, it's Kasabian in laidback mode so no unintentional comedy here. Better than some of their past piano and gospel choir slow songs but remember 'Club Foot''s 'OOF!'? That's the Kasabian I like(d).

The Magnetic Fields - Quick!

Yep, if not for Hawley's release this timeless beauty would have been top of the page. It's kinda girl group, kind slack(er) and sounds like it's always been your favourite song. Admittedly it does just go round and round but when it sounds like this, you don't grudge it.

Band of Skulls - Sweet Sour

BoS have been around a while and remain on the peripheries adrift of a scene or notable hit. Yes it's 'quite' good but if I had three and a half minutes to fill I can just stick on The Black Keys and get something similar and better.
