Newcomers Of 2010 - Perfume Genius

The bravest album of the year

After checking himself out of rehab and fleeing back to his parents’ Seattle home, Mike Hadreas began to write songs on his piano as a therapeutic pursuit. The delicate, raw tunes served to heal him from a past filled with abuse and addiction and form the basis of the magical ‘Learning’. “I guess it was a way for me to map out what had happened to me and the perspective I had on those things,” he told us. Hadreas never intended his songs to be heard outside a close circle of friends, so there is almost sense of voyeurism when listening to the choral dirge of ‘No Problem’ or the haunting plea of ‘Look Out Look Out’. The bravest album of the year.

Did You Know? The “He made me a tape of Joy Division” line from ‘Mr. Peterson’ made us cry.
