Manda Rin

Bis frontwoman goes solo

Manda Rin, aka Amanda MacKinnon, first tasted fame as a teenage member of Glasgow's twee disco punk pop trio Bis, along with school friend bandmates Sci-fi Steven and John Disco.

They shouted, they squealed, they soundtracked many an indie disco with their lo-fi temper tantrums. A 10th anniversary reunion aside it's been five years since Bis finally split with Manda keeping herself busy with numerous side projects, with the band, Juno!, as a guest for the J Rock outfit, Meister, and stints as a dj.

Listening to Manda's latest solo effort it all sounds like such a long time ago (and I suppose it was). Preceded by the single 'DNA' in August, the album 'My DNA' follows in September and showcases a very different Manda Rin to the one who appeared on Top of the Pops with Bis back in 1993. Taking her lead from the recent crop of notable female led bands such as CSS, The Gossip and New Young Pony Club, Manda's sound is funky, feisty and catchy as hell.

It's a natural progression considering her teenage musical output, this is the sound of a confident young woman, both musically and personally, with a number of years at the indie coalface behind her, spreading her wings. So, a big welcome back to Glasgow's Manda Rin, our very own (slightly paler) Lovefoxx.
