In The Works - Pure Love

In the studio with Frank Carter's new band

Frank Carter’s (ex-Gallows) and Jim Carroll’s (ex-Suicide File and Hope Conspiracy) new band has been shrouded in mystery since day one and has still not been properly uncovered. Fooling many people into thinking they had become a shoegaze band with a trailer featuring some ominous music and no shouting, Frank and Jim talk to Clash to discuss what the new collective is all about.

“All of our bands kind of took a backseat and that’s essentially why I left Gallows, because I wasn’t happy doing that and I really wanted to put all I had into Pure Love,” says Frank. “When [Jim and I] met it just gelled really quickly and we both realised that we wanted the same things, and that was to write big hooky rock songs.”

They seem to be blossoming in this change, there is no fear or uncertainty in any shape or form, just unmitigated confidence: “Definitely not worried about losing old fans,” Jim states. “Obviously, if they come along with us that’s great, but if they don’t like it they don’t like it. We’re very much looking forward to having new fans and broadening our horizons.”

The only gig the band has played so far was on Valentine’s Day at London’s Bush Hall - the next will be at the Scala on May 29th. You only need to watch a few seconds of the YouTube footage to see that this a completely different project and that Frank Carter has a surprising set of lungs on him. He even manages to sing in the middle of the crowd without being mauled by people with more tattoos than sense, that’s how much of a transition their work has gone through: “I don’t ever want to compare this to any of our previous bands,” Frank explains. “We’ve got happiness and we are not angry young men anymore, we are happy young men. We’re still going to put the same amount of passion and energy into our delivery and the shows, it’s just going to be in a different way. I won’t be missing lines because I’m fucking killing someone, I’ll be missing lines because I’ll be having a fucking great time.”
