The sounds of his studio

This month’s compilation is from London menswear designer Lee Roach. Italian Vogue tagged him as the London fashion scene’s purist and his A/W ’12 presentation was a standout from the LFW menswear day. Here, Lee gives us an insight into the sounds of his studio by picking his favourite tunes and why he loves them so much.

MADONNA ‘LIKE A PRAYER’
“Madonna’s Blonde Ambition tour, 1990; stylistically this was her most incredible period.”

DEPECHE MODE 'BEHIND THE WHEEL’
“Featured in the brilliant Depeche Mode 101 documentary, which follows the band and a group of fans who won a radio contest around the US on a bus for their 1988 Music For The Masses world tour that ends at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California.”

NEW ORDER ‘CEREMONY’
“The music that remains a constant influence, combined with iconic Peter Saville artwork.”

JOY DIVISION ‘ATMOSPHERE’
“Simply beautiful.”

ROXY MUSIC ‘JEALOUS GUY’
“Roxy Music maintain a specific musical style and glamour, adhering to Bryan Ferry’s belief that clothing and appearance enhance musical output. He possesses an incredible aesthetic awareness beyond the sound.”

BRIAN ENO ‘2/2’
“This track, like the whole record, has a divine and strangely inspiring emptiness.”

SISTERS OF MERCY ‘LU CRETIA MY REFLECTION’
““Hot metal and methedrine”, when sung in Andrew Eldritch’s voice over the drumming, is so powerful; it’s masculine, minimal and erotic.”

NICO ‘CHELSEA GIRLS’
“Nico’s voice and performance have a powerful masculine strength/tone whilst retaining a very empowered sexuality. I have an enduring fixation with Andy Warhol, his collaborators and New York at the time.”

BAUHAUS ‘BELA LUGOSI’S DEAD’
“The performance of this song in the film The Hunger from 1983, starring David Bowie and Cathrine Deneuve, is the most beautiful opening to a film.”

MICHAEL JACKSON 'DANGEROUS’
“The first time I discovered the significance of combining musical and personal style; watching live tour videos, Michael Jackson became a childhood obsession.”
