Cross Section Download 72

March's free download album

A new issue of Clash means a new Cross Section download album to accompany your reading of said issue.

This month we have a free album for you featuring songs from Andrew Bird, Nedry, Maria And The Gay, Gang Colours, Lone, Kindness, Alex Nagshineh, Ghost Outfit, DVA and Patterns.

ANDREW BIRD ‘Eyeoneye’ (BELLA UNION)

Who said whistling in songs wasn’t cool anymore (if it ever was)? Andrew Bird’s latest effort ‘Break It Yourself ’ proves that the Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist could make a primary school recorder sound decent.

NEDRY ‘Violaceae’ (MONOTREME)

Bleak and moody, but in no way pretentious. Nedry landscapes a warped wasteland through ghostly lopped vocals. The lyrics are blurred, but the music says it all. Never has it felt so good to be drenched in complete darkness.

MARIA AND THE GAY ‘Daddy’s Bulge’ (BIG PRINT)

No you haven’t stumbled across some sick and twisted porn flick, you’ve just came across Maria And The Gay: an immature all-girl punk band who shout about council flats and other horrible realities. What’s not to love?

GANG COLOURS ‘On Compton Bay’ (BROWNSWOOD)

Gang Colours brings melancholy and feeling to a genre that is so often soulless and repetitive. Using electronically manipulated vocals and sultry piano riffs, Will Ozanne brings heart instead of glows sticks to his music.

LONE ‘Angel Brain’ (MAGIC WIRE)

You lucky boys and girls, we have yet another artist that has refreshed a worn-out genre. It’s like Christmas all over again, except now you’re getting a big pile of audible hallucinogenics rather than a Primark hoody.

KINDNESS ‘Cyan’ (FEMALE ENERGY)

Whether he’s threatening to break your legs or make them dance, Kindness is going to make your body hurt in the morning one way or another with a catchy vocal hook and relentless bass line. Just watch out for his barnet.

ALEX NAGSHINEH ‘Fair Warning Remix’ (STRANGER)

This half-Iranian Londoner seems to have the Midas touch as everything he remixes turns to pure gold. Using minimalistic electronics, Alex doesn’t overcrowd his tunes and proves that sometimes less is more.

GHOST OUTFIT ‘I Want Someone Else’ (SWAYS RECORDS)

These spectral souls unleash sleazy and simplistic distorted rock that is so dirty it’ll make you feel a little bit special and a lot lot younger. Stand still as their incessant reverb will roll back the years.

DVA ‘Eye Know Featuring Natalie Maddix’ (HYPERDUB)

It’s as if Marty McFly went back in time to the ’70s and threw the funk era an Apple Mac. Here DVA combines soulful vocals with mellow beats that works incredibly well, despite the bad movie reference.

PATTERNS ‘Throwing Stones’ (MELODIC)

Who doesn’t love a good “woah woah woah” song? Exactly, everyone does. And these lot do it in an epic hands-up stadium show fashion, and not in a your-dad-singing-Bon-Jovi-in-the-car-on-Saturday kind of way.
