Calories might sound familiar to some readers.
If so, it’s probably because the three Birmingham boys were once part of the much-tipped Distophia, whose potential was punctured when their label decided to focus on Hard-Fi instead of their intelligent indie-pop. Their loss, our gain, because everything we’ve heard from Calories to date fills us with joy - the three tracks on their MySpace page (at the time of writing) tap into formulas perfected by certain Stateside acts of great acclaim, some of whom comprise their key influences (again, check MySpace), but add a domestic twist that’s addictive to these here ears. With gang-vocal choruses guaranteed to get a sweaty live room singing right back at the trio, and a debut album already in the bag, 2009 could well be Calories’ year. Don’t expect them to go top of the pops, but if you’re after new indie heroes to brand your schoolbooks with, listen no further.
