Alessi's Ark on Clash's Diesel:U:Music show tomorrow

Five quick questions.....
Alessis Ark pics.jpg
At just eighteen, Alessi Laurent-Marke is but a wee nipper and a mere slip of girl, but her intelligent music speaks volumes. Comparisons have already been made to the wailing falsetto tones of Joanna Newsom and Regina Spektor, but Alessi’s sound is much more polished and mature, which is surprising for someone so young.

A treasured child of Mother Nature (despite living in Hammersmith) Alessi is the embodiment of earthy mystique and this can be expressly heard throughout her beguiling nymph-esque cries. Describing her sound as “handmade,” it is carefully spun with threads of acoustic tenderness and is inspired by drawings, bus rides and most recently, a visit to Eastbourne. Amongst her music idols are venerable folk legends Karen Dalton and Neil Young, but it was listening to The Hollies that first inspired her to write music.

And things couldn’t get much better for Alessi, having recently been in Nebraska recording her debut album with Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes). “Mike has made some of my very favourite music and it felt like a real longshot asking him but he found some time and we did it! A dream come true,” she says.

We asked her five quick Alessi-based questions…

If you could be in a fairytale, which one would you be in and why?
I don’t think I’d like to live in one for too long but if I had to choose it would definitely be Hansel and Gretel. I’d love to feast off the all the sweets and cakes!

Do you believe in ghosts?
I think we all live on in memories.

Franky and Zoeey or Catcher in the Rye?
Frankie and Zooey! When I was writing a fanzine, Brain Bulletin, I used the pseudonym Zooey Smith.

Have you ever fallen off a horse?
No, just stroked one.

Do you know any good magic tricks?
