Nearly a decade and a half after the pair’s debut collaboration was introduced to the world, this season sees adidas and Yohji Yamamoto renewing their sartorial vows with the release of a second line entitled Y-3 Sport.
Embodying the dark aesthetic of the latter with the former’s tech heavy credentials, the premium collection debuts an innovative approach to performance wear. As the Japanese designer asserts, “Sport is Y-3. It is the brand’s central essence and inspiration, and the reason I approached adidas in 2001 to collaborate together. We want to be bold."
Announcing Y-3 Sport is an accompanying short, above, directed by Nathalie Canguilhem – elsewhere celebrated for her efforts with Versace Versus, Diesel and Charlotte Gainsbourg – it boasts the moniker, ‘The Are No Rules’.
Tapping the stylist Alastair McKimm and with Graham Rounthwaite as creative director, the evocative clip is shot completely in black and white, with flashes of VHS footage and a concrete heavy backdrop, it muses on the line’s renegade spirit and high fashion origins.
