Realm & Empire AW16

The brand taps the IWM for inspiration.

On the surface, Realm & Empire might appear just like any other menswear label tapped into the ‘heritage’ trend, but beyond its contemporary aesthetics the brand’s core is a thoroughly British affair, owing to its seasonal field trips to the Imperial War Museum.

A lesson in sartorial dealings – the design team’s attention is focused on the museum’s garment and print archives as opposed to the general display of world history – in the five years since it was founded Realm & Empire has referenced everything from texture to palette, and AW16 proves no different.

This season the brand takes on a navy inspired approach (just check the look book, pictured above, clearly on a ship and boasting the relevant old school casting), with a matching hero piece in the Indigo Stripe tee, a long sleeve version of the label’s cotton Henley tee and a WW2 alike thermal, dabbling in nautical stripes.

Elsewhere the US Marine shirt nods to its namesake, featuring a three button pocket detail (a la the archives) and a traditional cross-over yoke design; the faded wash likewise a vehicle for a vintage sensibility.
