The pop-up concept is a tried and tested formula and east London is no doubt the location for some of its finest work; this week the area will play host to Patagonia, with the arrival of a pop-up shop with a difference.
Founded in 1973, the Cali based outerwear label has long been privy to a number of environmental movements, which makes its latest venture both predictable but also rather brilliant.
Taking over Village Underground from Thursday through to Friday (open 18:00-21:00 and 09:00-21:00 respectively), the Patagonia Thrift Store entertains a new model of vintage shopping, a complete rejection of the ‘fill a bag’ idea that has led many a floral fan to Berlin and beyond.
Instead the brand is limiting sales to one item per person, with the pieces on offer a selection of repaired and customised Previously Used Products. As the press release best puts it, ‘Patagonia builds clothing that is made to last – sometimes longer than a person has use for it. The most responsible option for this unused gear is to get it into the hands of people who will put it back into action.’
In addition to the thrift store a Worn Wear Repair Station (which basically does as the tin suggests, furthering still the lifespan of Patagonia’s garments), will be in residency on Friday (25th November) at Boxpark’s The Brokedown Palace – five minutes from Village Underground – from 11:00-19:00.
