Joe Cruz For Whistles

The label debuts a new capsule collection.

Joe Cruz is the kind of person who probably draws on their newspaper when talking to a friend on the phone. Not the traditional silly doodles, but fat outlines around politicians or the latest celebrity with a film to promote; not done mockingly, but with a genuine intrigue in the contours of the image.

This, we gather, via a brief initiation to his art, offered courtesy of the illustrator’s Instagram page (he’s also on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr).

It’s this bold combination of colours, graphics and expression that have no doubt won him fans (and clients), in the form of Stussy, Melissa and creative champions It’s Nice That.

This season sees Whistles join the list, as Cruz presents a two-piece collection for the brand’s still relatively new menswear line.

Available in-store and online from next month, the capsule collection is made up of just a grey tee and a blue sweat, each bearing motifs depicting the infamous Barbican structure, à la Whistles’ AW14 campaign, shot by Jamie Hawkesworth around the concrete complex.

The small line presents the space in a new light, forgoing the conservatory and ponds that traditionally clog social media.
