Icons Indeed: Ben Sherman

The menswear brand takes on 5 icons for a new shirt series.

Five decades, five icons, five designs, 1,250 shirts; Ben Sherman’s new venture with the Teenage Cancer Trust is hardly a numbers game, but it always helps to know the facts.

Following their T-shirt project back in March – in which the menswear brand produced a range of tees baring black and white Janette Beckman images from 1979-82 for the trust – the pair have now released a selection of tailored shirts.

And they’ve pulled in favours from some of music and art’s most favoured faces (icons, indeed). Trawling through the decades from the 60s to 2000, when said men each first made their mark, the list includes a Patron of Teenage Cancer Trust, Roger Daltrey.

Additionally, Sir Peter Blake, Bernard Sumner, Jarvis Cocker and Jake & Dinos Chapman (making it six icons, to be exact), complete the line-up. Each contributing their expertise, this could be the making of a dream gig with the sharpest poster around.

Alas, the classic Ben Sherman button down is where it’s at, and the tops in question provide a strong distraction from fantasy gig planning. That is, each one is genuinely wearable. Like, really.

The Chapman brothers provide numerous smiles with a red and white smiley print, while Daltrey wears his heart not on his sleeve but around his shoulders it seems. Primarily navy, a cut up Union Jack takes over from the chest up.

Using the same colour palette but with a completely different effect, Peter Blake’s design is simple. Retaining the traditional white base, his single pocket features a star design and above it Blake’s delicate signature.

Speaking about the project, Jarvis Cocker (a bit too over excitedly truth be told) said, “Teenage Cancer Trust are really spoiling me! First they helped me realise a lifetime's ambition to play the Royal Albert Hall, and now they have arranged for me to have an item of clothing produced to my own design. I mean guys, really - you're too kind! “.

His design features a trompe l’oeil version of his trademark glasses, while Sumner’s black shirt references Roman mythology.
