‘Humans have had three dreams since the dawn of time. One is flight, another is transformation and the last is communicating with animals and nature’ wrote Osamu Tezuka in 201 Words That Help You to Open Up a Path to the Future.
This was the quote that designer Hiroaki Ohya recalled when beginning work with Lacoste L!VE, in a partnership that makes its second drop next month.
Comprising of six tops – a mixture of polos and jersey tees – the range is bright in colour and strong in ideas, as Ohya-san delved into the manga giant’s archive to pick scenes that celebrated the above.
‘The stories are developed successively on the cover of the package, the front and sometimes back of the body…in order of introduction, development, turn and conclusion,’ he says of the so-called polo comics.
Continuing the expansion of Tezuka Productions – the company the ‘God of Manga’ and creator of Astro Boy and Black Jack (ask a friend if comics aren’t your thing), Tezuka left following his death in 1989 – the collaboration follows on from Spring Summer’s initial range and will include footwear too.
With leather uppers and printed scenes from Astro Boy, he of red boots, black pants and green belt fame, the collection’s shoe of choice is the Broadwick sneaker, a casual style that’ll no doubt find fans amongst manga’s many.
Available from September.
