Fashion Round Up: 19/09

Clash plays catch up.

After 38 years, Jean Paul Gaultier this week announced he would step down from ready to wear, instead focusing his energies on haute couture and his own label perfume line.

“For some time, I have found true fulfillment in working on the haute couture and it allows me to express my creativity and my taste for research and experimentation,” he claimed, adding also that “commercial constraints” and the pace of which RTW works were issues.

The announcement that next week’s show, as part of Paris Fashion Week, would be his last for RTW, follows this summer’s successful ‘World of…’ exhibition at London’s Barbican.

In contrast, Christopher Shannon formally announced the release of a womenswear line this week, following earlier social media calls for assistance with the collection’s production (since deleted).

15 looks make up the debut Spring Summer offering, which sees Shannon’s interest in various areas of British culture realised via signature pieces such as sweatshirts, tailored sports trousers and a selection of T-shirt dresses.

The label first dipped its toes into the womenswear pool with collaborative Lulu & Co pieces, later dressing girls in menswear for the AW13 catwalk show. Receiving the first BFC/GQ Menswear Fund in June, will no doubt have given the label further encouragement for a full collection.

Finally, Billionaire Boys Club and Rinse FM have hooked up to create ‘Futuristic Frequencies’, an ongoing collaboration that’ll see the pair produce clothing and events.

A pop-up radio store opens today for ten days, celebrating the station’s 20th anniversary, selling the collab’s first batch of wares: black and white tees, caps and jumpers with a unique logo and BBC astronaut.

As well as the pop-up on Dray Walk, Brick Lane, the capsule collection can be picked up at BBC’s London flagship plus online at the brand’s website.
