It’s been an unsettling start to July for the fashion crowd. Amongst the couture shows there’s been revealing tweets, suspended labels and a romantic - or sickly, depending on your viewpoint - campaign video from Burberry.
On Sunday - not technically July but the fallout followed then - model Jourdan Dunn tweeted ‘Ahahahahahaha I just for cancelled from Dior because of my boobs! I❤ fashion #Couture’ followed by ‘I'm normally told I'm cancelled because I'm 'coloured' so being cancelled because off my boobs is a minor : ) ’.
Initial responses have focused on her size-hardly silhouette ruining-but it’s the second tweet that struck us as the most telling. In the same week that Kenyan born model, Malaika Firth became the first black model to appear in a Prada campaign since Naomi Campbell almost 20 years ago - herself appearing on the Atelier Versace catwalk earlier in the week - Dunn’s comments (and the racial ratio throughout the industry generally), continues to be an issue with no side taking the blame.
Louise Gray announced the suspension of her label via a piece on Vogue.co.uk on Monday. ‘I didn't want to jeopardise a business that I have worked so hard to build,’ she said of the news to take two seasons away from the catwalk.
The Scottish designer will continue to work closely with the industry, consulting for as yet undisclosed brands. She plans to return with her SS15 collection next year.
On Wednesday it was announced that the Nicole Farhi brand has gone into administration, just a fortnight after the label debuted its Spring Summer 14 menswear line at London Collections: Men.
Advisory and restructuring specialists Zolfo Cooper have apparently been called in, and the brand will continue trading in-store while buyers are secured for the business.
A bit of romance to finish up, in the form of Burberry’s AW13 campaign. Featuring real life actor couple Sienna Miller and Tom Sturridge and set to Tom Odell’s ‘Hold Me’, the video accompanying the campaign sees the pair kissing and cuddling dressed in Burberry trenches and new season leather jackets; the latter gets many a mention in the video’s comments on YouTube.
