Esprit By Opening Ceremony

Carol Lim and Humberto Leon have announced a new collaboration.

Like its heyday contemporaries of French Connection and United Colours of Benetton, American label Esprit has aged into a beast not exactly the mirror image of its former self. But that could all be about to change, following the announcement of a collaboration with Opening Ceremony.

“We’ve loved Esprit since we were teenagers,” explains the latter’s founders, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, “and as with our roots also in California, this collection is one of our dream collaborations.”

Describing the AW16 offering as “Opening Ceremony’s interpretation of the original Esprit staples that we hoarded for our closets growing up,” the pair have created a 40-piece collection that pays homage to Esprit’s iconic aesthetic circa the 80’s and 90’s (read: bright colours, that iconic branding and lots of jersey).

“We are happy to see the creative vision of our founders, Susie and Doug Tompkins, revived in a contemporary and current way by way of Humberto and Carol’s design sensibility,” notes the Chief Brand Marketing Officer of Espirt, Arnd Müller.

Similarly referencing the brand’s mid-80’s visuals is the accompanying campaign, pictured above and styled by Charlotte Collet with photography by Charlotte Wales, it plays with light and posture to evoke another time.
