Designer Barbie x Selfridges

Nasir Mazhar, Fred Butler and SISTER by Sibling all create outfits for the famous doll.

A style icon to Paris Hilton, Elle Woods and many a Disney channel starring teen, Barbie’s look has never suited anyone quite as well as her, try as they may (and boy do they).

For the launch of its new in-house Toy Shop however, Selfridges decided the 54 year old plastic doll was due some new threads. They got her people to speak to their people and their people spoke to some other people, and this week outfits by London favourites Fred Butler, Nasir Mazhar and SISTER by SIBLING were debuted.

Less Malibu more Hackney, Mazhar showed off three ladies looks plus the infamous bucket head men’s design. On creating the east London mini me’s he said, ‘I never realised how intricate it would be to recreate my collection in miniature for Barbie.’

The Sibling trio’s dolls wear a selection of recognisable knitted pieces from AW13 (soon to be available for real life Barbies) and star with a couple of pooches too (available in all good pet shops).

Finally Butler’s dolls – which the grapevine tells us have proved very popular indeed – are adorned with costumes influenced by a cross section of seasons. ‘I basically spent the majority of my childhood playtime making outfits for my Barbie,’ she said.

Each doll is a one-off and available exclusively from Selfridges’ 4th floor. Big kids should apply within.
