David Bowie
Thin white duke
Born plain David Jones, the world wasn't quite prepared for Bowie's androgynous breakthrough with the Zigg Stardust project. However, the singer was a veteran of countless British r'n'b groups, and had a wide knowledge of popular music. It is this knowledge that fueled his massively success albums in the 70s and 80s. Continually changing his sound and visual image, Bowie confounded both fans and critics alike. The glam of Ziggy Stardust was followed by the plastic soul of "Young Americans", which was in turn superseded by the legendary Berlin trilogy of synthesizer based music. Still an engrossing performer and recording artist, Bowie is one of British music's most charismatic and creative figures.
