Black Dog
Groundbreaking UK Electronica
Originally formed in the very late 80s, Downie worked with Ed Handley and Andy Turner. They had many releases on Sheffield’s Warp imprint, of which ‘Bytes’ and ‘Spanners’ are the most critically acclaimed, and the music they made pigeonholed as ‘Intelligent Techno’. Turner and Handley split acrimoniously from Downie and formed Plaid in 1995. Downie kept his moniker, and concentrated primarily on his remix work. The name, claims Downie, hails from a mystical black dog often with red eyes that usually presents itself at extreme times. He had a brain storming session with his other comrades at the time. “It just kinda fitted.”
