Shred Yr Face Exclusive Download

Shred Yr Face 3 may be over but ClashMusic has a special treat for fans of out there alt folk.

Founded as a means to get their favourite bands to tour the UK, the promoters behind Shred Yr Face returned recently with their third instalment. Last year the tour was No Age, Fucked Up and The Bronx share a tour bus, shattering ear drums as they go.

This time round, it seems as if something a little quieter was in order. Shred Yr Face 3 featured some striking acoustic based antics from Espers, The Cave Singers and Woods.

Perhaps best known of the three were Espers. The band had just released their new album 'III' when the call came to take part, rampaging around venues across the nation.

The Cave Singers meanwhile specialise in some spectral psych folk. Rising out of the ashes of much loved group Pretty Girls Make Graves the band released their new album 'Welcome Joy' earlier this year.

Woods, meanwhile, were the wild card. Coming into their own on Shred Yr Face 3 the band are one of Brooklyn's best kept secrets with their home recordings just recently reaching a wider audience.

Calling in a venues across the nation, Shred Yr Face 3 was a stunning success. To celebrate, ClashMusic can offer you a neat little download bundle:

Espers - Riding (Right click to download)

Dj Mix Podcast Series - Luke Slater

A techno masterclass is what we’re offering in this week’s exclusive DJ mix, from a pioneer of a producer, DJ and remixer whose electronic output still sounds as fresh today as it did when he began releasing in the early nineties – Luke Slater.

After beginning to DJ in the initial phases of the acid house scene – an influence which still permeates some of his music – Slater began his recording career at Jelly Jam Records in Brighton, before going on to release a wide range of experimental techno on a variety of labels, including Novamute (which spawned the renowned albums ‘Freek Funk’ and ‘Wireless’) and Peacefrog, where he began using his (now widely recognised) Planetary Assault Systems moniker to release his harder-edged output.

A track from the Planetary Assault Systems alias – taken from the ‘Temporary Suspension’ album released earlier this year on Berlin label Ostgut Ton –also finishes up Slater’s exclusive Clash mix in glorious uncompromising fashion. The mix itself is a typically experimental affair – exploring everything from stripped-back minimal sounds to jittery synth-lines to rushes of harder beats – but one which never lets up from its techno paradigm, presented with true Slater flair.

Slater also pays homage to his many and varied electronic roots and influences, with a nod to the seminal Detroit scene and some of its key players via back-to-back tracks from Robert Hood and Jeff Mills. These blend into the sounds of contemporary techno from those who are continuing to evolve the genre, such as France’s Terrence Fixmer and James Ruskin.

Slater’s mix is, quite simply, techno heaven, purveyed by a true master of the scene.

Dj Mix Podcast Series - Marcel Knopf

For this week’s exclusive DJ mix we put you in the safe hands of a man with an expert ear for a tasty beat and unique groove – Marcel Knopf.

Hailing from the techno-haven that is Berlin, Marcel was always bound to be a dab hand at relaying techno, but his tastes extend far beyond just this. As his Clash mix shows, he also incorporates some of the best in house, dub and broken beats into his DJ sets. Artists featured in the mix include the downtempo goodness of Jay Haze and the lush electronics of Lusine, as well as several choice cuts from Marcel himself.

Another track to listen out for is the remix of ‘It Put Me Well’ by Phil Weeks – a cracking proggy house stomper with a trippy, dark edge – more proof, if any were needed, that Marcel knows his stuff in this field. Shifting seamlessly between minimal, upbeat and a range of bases between, Marcel’s mix perfectly displays his ability to keep things fresh and experimental while also retaining a solid dancefloor vibe throughout – a talent which can be heard on Marcel’s latest record – ‘Dusty Dance’, released in late October on Mo’s Ferry Productions.

Dj Mix Podcast Series - Groove Armada

This week’s exclusive DJ mix comes from none other than Tom Findlay of Groove Armada. Hardly a stranger to mixing beats, Tom – with Andy Cato – has been enjoying widespread success and acclaim with Groove Armada since the heady days of the late nineties, when they burst onto the scene.

Over the years Groove Armada have made waves through both the underground and wider dance channels thanks to huge crossover appeal, with a string of hit tracks including ‘Superstylin’ and ‘At The River’.

Tom’s exclusive mix for Clash delves into techno, house and general slick electronic goodness of all kinds, exploring both the downtempo vibes and irresistible beats and melodies for which Groove Armada have become known. Featured artists include LCD Soundsystem, DJ T, and a marvellous Greg Wilson edit of A Guy Called Gerald’s ‘Voodoo Ray’.

There are also two fine remixes of Groove Armada’s upcoming single, I Won’t Kneel’ (released November 16, and taken from upcoming album ‘Black Light’) each slotting in seamlessly with the eclectic mood of the mix.

Cross Section Download Album

In an effort to continually seduce your ears, Clash has rounded up the cream of the music that is spoken about in this issue and slapped it on a download album.

We are worried about you. Are you sure you’ve been listening to enough new music? Worry not, as we have a lively playlist of future anthems for you.

Love your ears, love your lobes, love those tiny drums in your head that make you move. Download ALL the best music from this issue of Clash - for FREE - now!

The Phenomenal Hand Clap Band ‘15 To 20’ (Tummy Touch)

Being a New York band is tricky. Being at THE axis of melting music culture it is your job to sound like everything whilst sounding new, replicating cool and not resembling any other New York band. Past or present. And it is a task that’s only getting harder. Yet Collás and Marquand, two NYC DJs turned producers, have managed to twist a psychedelic blend of disco, electro, techno, soul and funk into a coherent party that sounds like no other. And yet sounds like it’s from New York. WTF? Here, the rather dashing Skull Juice cranks up the disco bass to make it sound EVEN more indigenous. Double WTF? Job done.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart ‘Higher Than The Stars’ (Fortuna POP!)

Harking back to a more naive time when young Morrisseys roamed free in the hills and nibbled on the uncut pages of TS Eliot novels, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart are here as romantic hurl-backs. Standing with their hat in their hands and their blood-red hearts bleeding on their sleeves, these svelte Americans are all about revealing their emotions on a soaring bed of synths and pleading lyrics. Ephemeral indie manna from a heaven that never knew of the vagaries of nu-rave or emo. Sniff.

Kurt Vile ‘Overnight Religion’ (4AD)

This chap has been knocking on our door previously as the guitarist in War On Drugs and is surely set for a fine career as a superhero with a name like Kurt Vile, or perhaps that should be a baddie. Either way we are hooked by his jangled soul, which skips about in whimsical flashes with endless nuance as Kurt employs vocal harmonies, drones, carefree strummings and dark textures to paint a sonic picture that’s at once engaging yet deep, deep, deep in its layers. Bring forth any war you are associated with, Kurt - if it sounds this good we’ll not need drugs.

Teitur ‘Hitchhiker’ (A&G)

This fellow is from the Faroe Islands in the north Atlantic. If you ever see an Icelandic dude meet a Faroese peep then chances are the latter will get a ribbing for being a ‘seasick moaner’. The reason for this is because when Eric the Red was banished from Norway and was rowing around looking for the promised land they stopped at the Faroes, only to find it too small. Always aspirational, they pushed on, but not before they’d left all the moaners and Vikings that had been seasick behind in the middle of the night. So it goes. Teitur sings of isolation and separation, so the abandonment still burns deep. He is, however, growing into a master songsmith and here his majestic talents are completely on show. Just don’t mention rowing boats.

Cate Le Bon ‘Hollow Trees House Hounds’ (Irony Bored)

Hands up who likes Super Furry Animals? Loads of fists on show obviously. Well, Cate Le Bon is the first act to be signed by the Furries singer and melodic hero Gruff Rhys to his new label, Irony Bored (hilarious!), which looks to have a great future if they continue with such great signings such as Cate. This lady is a folkie with flair and records only in the dark. Clearly she’s hard and hard to scare, and she’s been touring with Slow Club who, though not hard, are certainly no fools. Cate, we relish your next moves with French aplomb.

Yo La Tengo ‘Periodically Double Or Triple’ (Matador)

Unique beyond belief, this collective have more facets of fascination than you can imagine. Destined to be a cult band, they reinforced this when they managed to play as The Velvet Underground in the 1996 film I Shot Andy Warhol. Here, they tread an effortless line in chirpy pop, New York observational psychedelia and Hammond hammered cinematic soundtrack. Their name may well mean ‘I’ve got it!’ in Spanish, but this is the tip of their factual iceberg. Dive into this band and you’ll be repaid over the years. And they’ve been going for two decades already. Get involved.

2562 ‘Unbalance’ (Tectonic)

Musical marmite. 2562’s swathe through the dubstep scene has been pretty noticeable, however Dave Huisman’s new album is incisive for a massive spectrum of signifiers. His programming is progressive as fuck, his blending of old strains of garage and new off-kilter percussion is unique and he still manages to cram little reference bits and tip his hat to parallel dance scenes of Detroit and Chicago. He loves space and his strength as you’d expect is in his dub and gaps. He in short rocks - if you like weird time codes and lots of bass.

Hudson Mohawke ‘Rising’ (Warp)

Imagine Timbaland utterly out his tree on ketamine and trips failing around in his studio in his underpants howling at the moon. Fun isn’t it? Well, Hudson Mohawke doesn’t really sound like nor look like this, but he does sound like some kind of strangely altered shiny hip-hop producer whose girlfriend should be painfully attractive. One thing’s for sure: Hudson is here and he’s probably gonna stay, such is the public fervour for the man’s distracted beats and shattered LA signature sounds. Big visions for bigger beats.

Sugar Daddy ‘Love Honey’ (Tirk)

Greg Wilson launches here an original edit of a dance classic after perfecting the art for years. If you don’t know what an edit is then read his fascinating account of experimentation, rejection then triumph in this issue of Clash. It involves getting seriously ‘play-school’ on old reel to reel tapes. If you don’t know what old reel to reel tapes are then DEFINITELY read Greg’s historical account! Here, Sugar Daddy reminds us of halcyon dance culture where tracks came from unique angles and not studios more akin to Big Bertha on E. Patience people.

Royksopp ‘Tricky Tricky’ (Wall Of Sound)

A Royksopp is a lysergic fungi from Northern Norway. Fact. I couldn’t find any when I went this summer. Very annoying fact. Compensation though is never far around the corner, as we enjoy this little gem from arguably Norway’s most successful dance duo and here they show why. Massive electro with quirky vocals from Karin Dreijer, formerly of The Knife and now Fever Ray. Karin does manage to ponder “Is six afraid of seven, cos seven eight nine?” but effortlessly gets away with it, largely thanks to the captivating techno niggles and jiggles that Royksopp pave their dancing path with. Just don’t ask them about their forefathers sneaking away in rowing boats at 3am on small islands.

Twinkranes ‘Fizz Nor Feedback’ (Twisted Nerve)

We love bands that cant spell. It makes our job so much easier. It is a classic case of heavy biscuits here though, as Twinkranes showcase their love of a pounding rhythm. Narcotic in their use of electronics they have been loosely labelled “a more druggy Fujiya And Miyagi”, which aint a million miles from the crack den. They certainly have a Krautrockesque ability to tease out the elements of their song into an epic dance of delectation, which regains ground with every break. They are from Austin, which is great news as often bands from this city prefer convention to anything else and many sound the same. Twinkranes don’t. Bleep fest. Love it. Take me now.

Download 'Miracle'

Pins & Digits is the debut release from Julien Dyne. This talented drummer & beatmaker from New Zealand has produced & remixed tracks for the likes of Fat Freddys Drop & Dj Vadim. Imagine Flying Lotus meets Madlib in a 70's US cop show..

Download 'Steel Legs'

Sisters of Transistors call themselves the UK’s Premier Combo Organ Quartet and Ladies Social Club. It's hard to talk about their sound with out referencing artists as diverse as Goblin, Ennio Morricone, The Shangri Las, Manuel Gottsching and the B52s.

Head to head between Finnish maverick Jimi Tenor & Afrobeat drumming legend, Tony Allen. A raw & heavy analogue sound, mixing the full range of Allen’s Afrobeat repertoire with Tenor’s off-kilter brew of dark humour, tongue-in-cheek lyrics & tight, firing musicianship.

Download 'Selfish Gene'

-

The Antlers - Hospice
(Frenchkiss)

Destined to be one of the year’s most talked-about new bands. "Hospice" is a heart-wrenching meditation on love and loss, a ‘skyscraping blend of the ambient and the anthemic’ - Pitchfork

Download 'Two'

-

Memory Tapes - Seek Magic
(Something In Construction)

Huge acclaim from the big US blogs, Radio1. Guardian, Uncut, NME ( "victory is assured"). This beautiful "achingly gorgeous dance pop". (Pitchfork, 8.3) is "one of 2009's most satisfying albums". A brilliant debut album from a very bright new star.

Download 'Bicycle'

-

Annie - Don't Stop
(Smalltown Supersound)

Norwegian Cool-Pop postergirl Annie throws down her brand new album ‘Don’t Stop’ on Smalltown Supersound. A collection of sublime hooks stirred into a melting pot of blazing pop beats, singalong choruses and some odd, twisted darkness. ‘Don’t Stop’ is the pop sound of now!

Download 'I Don't Like Your Band'

-

Invasion - The Master Alchemist
(This Is Music)

Invasion's debut album, a synapse shredding twenty one minute assault of psych-soul metal.
"A landmark British heavy metal album... nothing short of a masterpiece” - The Music Fix
"Pretty much the most exciting thing happening in UK metal right now" – NME

Download 'Spells Of Deception'

-

Espers - III
(Wichita)

For their third album, Espers aim for a lighter, brighter sound than the dense and dark sounds of "II". Essential for fans of "II" whilst potentially appealing to a broader set of listeners, this is still uniquely Espers. See them on the third Shred Yr Face tour in November.

Download 'Caroline'

"Bernard Sumner returns & this sounds more vital than anything New Order have done since Crystal" - NME. Includes the single "Sink or Swim". Available on Ltd Digipack CD with 2 Bonus tracks.

Download 'Dynamo'

Laura Gibson (Beast of Seasons) offers up an intimate affirmation of mortality, both vulnerable & courageous, dark & illuminating, ordinary & extraordinary.
"Gently cascading majesty" - Pitchfork
"Quietly bewitching. an arrestingly understated, accomplished work" - 8/10 Drowned In Sound

Close your eyes and imagine, if you will, the bastard son of the Misfits and Daft Punk. As gruesome as the act of conception may appear, the union would generate the most grandiose of offspring. A formidable force, not unlike the Bloody Beetroots.

Dj Mix Podcast Series - Drop The Lime

Don’t say we never treat you good, as this week we selflessly present you with a belting exclusive mix from New York bass monster and general dance music botherer Drop The Lime. And who better to wax lyrical on the mix than the man himself – Clash caught up with DTL to quiz him on the vitals.

Tell us a little about the mix and some of the tracks you included.
I was feeling clubby, so I took it there on this mix. Bringing in old and new – some of those old 90’s hardcore rave tunes have the same energy and attitude as today’s club music.

Your mix has quite a diverse feel – Little Boots to L-Vis 1990 to Brian Eno – how do you decide what goes into a mix? Does it depend on your mood at the time?
Definitely. I like to blend in what keeps me going, and what I’m listening to at home or DJing in the club when it comes to mixes. Create a story with the mix.
With this one in particular, it’s a story of a night on the town. The intro is getting ready with your crew at the flat, then you hit the club… there’s peaks and in-betweens when you leave the dancefloor to go and get a drink, and then party some more... then get home and go to sleep (that’s where the Eno came into play).

One distinctive thing about the mix is that it keeps re-grabbing your attention by dropping in something new. Is it important to you to keep things fresh in this way?
Always. Keep. Things. Fresh.

Some favourite tracks to play live?
At the moment, ‘Devil’s Eyes’ is a rise, because the crowd is singing along with me. Emalkay’s ‘When I Look At You’ is a big one as well… It’ll usually be my transition into the dubstep portion of my set and people get wild.

Loved the Major Lazer and Little Boots remixes – what makes a good remix in your opinion?
Create something brand new without losing the vibe and energy of the original.

Any new material coming up?
The Major Lazer 12” should be out shortly, and I’ve got a new single ‘Set Me Free’ dropping November 2nd on Trouble & Bass… It’s an epic club banger featuring vocalist Carrie Wilds.

You played a fair few festivals over the summer – how was it doing ‘the circuit’, and which were your favourite ones to play?
Soooo many. Dour was pretty incredible. All of us breaking backs on the stage…

I see you’re playing NYC on New Year’s Eve – that should be an interesting one… Looking forward to it?
I won’t be playing New Year’s Eve… the rest of the T&B crew will be. I’ll be making the big dollars out of town ;p

Matias Aguayo - Ay Ay Ay

Listen to the new album by Matias Aguayo, 'Ay Ay Ay', before it's UK release on Kompakt records.

The album from the former Closer Musik and Broke member is his second long player and sees the Chilean born producer utilise his voice as an instrument in some incredible ways.

A prolific composer, under a multitude of pseudonyms and in a number of genres, 'Ay Ay Ay' is the follow up to his debut album 'Are You Really Lost?', released on Kompakt in 2005. In the interim he set up a label, Cómeme, with friends in South America and released two well received singles, 'Minimal' and 'Walter Neff', on his European home, Kompakt.

Listen to 'Ay Ay Ay' in full above and read ClashMusic's review of it HERE.

Mando Diao - Give Me Fire!

Listen to the new album from Sweden's Mando Diao, 'Give Me Fire!', on ClashMusic now.

Recorded with a pair of brothers who can claim to have been Sweden's hip hop dons back in the 90s in the group The Latin Kings. Mando Diao all being massive hip hop fans, their meeting with the Salazar brothers growing from a quest for an autograph into first one, then a whole album of songs.

As to the album's title, the band's Gustaf explains, “The title is a Swedish slang phrase. 'Eld' is 'fire', as in the kick you get out of drugs or alcohol – it translates as 'I want some spark in my life'. That track is about a friend of ours who was hooked on drugs. We decided to take his side of the argument on drugs – we looked at it from the perspective that this is an urge that everyone in the world has. Whether it's cigarettes or coffee or exercise or ecstasy, everyone in the world wants to get high off of something. That bled through into the whole album.”

With that in mind, and teamed with the Salazar's production, 'Give Me Fire!' is the band's strongest album yet, a blazing garage rock soul revue from the fjords.

Dj Mix Podcast Series - Claude VonStroke

Here at Clash, we love a good yarn, and so it seems only fitting to hand over our hallowed weekly DJ mix slot to hotshot tech-house producer Claude VonStroke, who has, by all accounts, led a rather interesting life.

Hailing from Detroit, Barclay Crenshaw (the VonStroke moniker arose when he and some partied-up pals were making up fake European DJ names for a laugh) got to where he is by (unsuccessfully) asking Juan Atkins for a job, working as an assistant on some Hollywood uber-films, playing a load of warehouse parties (where he lost all of his music in an electrical outage), making an epic film on electronic music, and finally starting a record label, which – amongst other artists – has released two fine albums from VonStroke himself.

VonStroke’s exclusive Clash mix showcases the wide range of classy house styles for which he has become known, veering from progressive minimal beats to glitchy tech-house, all expertly weaved together. Artists on the mix include a range of talent from Vonstroke’s own dirtybird label (including Jacob Seville, Iz and Diz, and Sascha Braemer), other carefully selected acts, and – of course – some choice cuts from the man himself, which come from his hot-off-the-press second album ‘Bird Brain’ – a diverse, masterful and danceable record, released but a few days previous – October 19 – to the airing of his superb Clash mix.

Dj Mix Podcast Series - Joey Negro

This week’s exclusive Clash DJ mix sees a stalwart of the house scene behind the decks – Joey Negro. Excelling as a producer, DJ and remixer, Joey – aka Dave Lee – has been instrumental in shaping contemporary house, disco and funk output for the best part of two decades.

Releasing classic material under a host of different monikers (Jakatta, Sessomato and Raven Maize, to name but a few), Joey began his music career proper by working at record shops in the late eighties, including Rough Trade, before starting his own label and getting stuck into producing his own massively well-received tracks, including ‘Must Be The Music’, ‘American Dream’ and ‘Forever Together’.

Joey’s exclusive mix showcases the eclectic taste which has earned him so much acclaim over the years, from the retro Jackin house vibes of Italo-disco act House Device to some soulful psychedelia via Motown act Undisputed Truth.

The last section of Joey’s mix moves seamlessly into a variety of funk textures, including the sleazy hooks of Dawson Cliff’s superb ‘I Don’t Know If I Can Make It’ and the delightful harmonies of The Jacksons in ‘Heartbreak Hotel’, before finishing beautifully with the Phenomenal Handclap Band’s ‘You’ll Disappear’.

Here, as ever, Joey Negro shows that the seamless production ethic and ear for a killer hook which found him fame are as intact and healthy as they’ve ever been. Classic stuff.

Cross Section Download Album November

It’s another bountiful month for good tunes, and, as the days are getting shorter and the nights are approaching earlier, what better way to keep yourself cosy than by basking in the glowing pride of getting a dozen songs for chuff all?

All you have to do is aim your mouse on that download link, listen to these little beauties, and read about them below.

Lusine
‘Twilight’
(Ghostly)

The atmospheric rustling of Burial meets the electric instrumentation of Air meets the vocal layering and echoing of Frou Frou. If that means nothing to you, you can either delve into those three artists or start with Lusine. With over twelve records and two film scores, Lusine should be a household name to anyone who fancies himself an abstract electronic music fan. But if he’s not, don’t tell anyone about it, and start listening now. Oh, and check out those other guys too.

Beth Jeans Houghton
‘Nightswimmer’
(Static Caravan)

For her voice alone, we can imagine Beth Jeans Houghton gets compared to Sarah McLachlan or Imogen Heap on a daily basis. And for pretty much any young female singer anywhere, that should be a barometer of talent. She delivers effortless harmonies as her voice floats over a xylophone driven melody. Ethereal pop, ambient pop, call it whatever you want but just take our word for it, it sounds so damn good.

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
‘Jackson’s Last Stand’
(Stiff Records)

UK’s Passion Pit? Not really, but that’s no bad thing. A high tempo beat with a high-calibre chest-thumping bass line and synthesizers up the ying-yang. When has good electro-pop not been welcome? You guessed it, your wish is Ou Est Le Swimming Pool’s command, summer might be over but ‘Jackson’s Last Stand’ is equipped to take autumn head on. Listen to song now, find out about band name later.

Kelpe
‘Eye Candy Bath’
(DC Recordings)

Sometimes you come across a song that can change your mood, or at least have you not worry about your mood for a while. Kelpe knows that nothing sounds better than a tabla beat... done right. And then the song takes a turn for the electric two thirds of the way in. Yeah, there’s a lot to see in an ‘Eye Candy Bath’, but no part of the song stands in the way of another. The song builds up like a slow-motion rollercoaster ride through a sonic soundscape. Now that’s a metaphor. Give it a listen, you’ll see what we mean.

Cymbals Eat Guitars
‘Transparent’
(Sister’s Den/Memphis Industries)

As unpredictable as Gordon Brown during a Libyan trade deal, CEG opens LARGE as guitars wail over a relatively mellow drum pattern. Basking in its schiziod feel, the song feels like a full length concert. With instrumental intervals, quiet bits with guitar picking and soft singing only and before you realise you’ve rested too much it draws you right back in with bombastic instrumentation. The vocals go from intimate whispering to top of your lungs screaming, and it works. Indie rock strategically pumped full of doses of steroids throughout its six minutes runtime.

Vitalic
‘Terminateur Benelux (John Lord Remix)’
(Citizen/PIAS)

Vitalic’s first singles and EPs appeared in 1996 but his debut album, ‘OK Cowboy’, appeared in 2005. What the hell took so long? Well, his debut album did. And you’ll understand when you first lay ears on the bombastic, raw techno/electro tracks Vitalic produces. ‘OK Cowboy’ was critically praised and is already regarded a classic in its genre, he has since played venues all over the world. Slow and steady wins the race.

Choir Of Young Believers
‘Next Summer’
(Ghostly)

Danish songwriter Jannis Makrigiannis will be testing the waters under the moniker Choir Of Young Believers along with a full band, but acting as the group’s main visionary. Everything about the band emits orchestral pop, be it the grandiose dramatic arrangements or the lyrics tinged with heartache and even bitter revenge. Music that recalls the no-holdsbarre orchestral hugeness that of ages past. Ahh… good times.

Micah P. Hinson
‘Runnin’Scared’
(Full Time Hobby)

Micah Hinson was born in 1981. We need to remind ourselves of this when we hear his records. Seeing him live is an almost anachronistic experience as out of the body of a twenty-eight-year-old man this voice comes out. A voice that sounds tired and hardened, as if it’s been through years of sorrow. His singing is reminiscent of the vocal stylings of Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan, both of whom Micah covered on his latest album ‘All Dressed Up And Smelling Of Strangers’. His deep voice doesn’t always manage to hit the high notes, but it isn’t for lack of trying, that’s for sure.

2020Soundsystem
‘Sliding away’
(2020Vision)

Electronic music’s own folly is that it almost always needs to be heard live to ingest to maximum capacity. It would take an astonishingly good record to equal the feeling of your chest vibrating with every bass thump on a dance floor or festival ground. 2020Soundsystem must have known that as their band was doing live gigs well before they even had any tracks written down. Now they bring us ‘Falling’, their sophomore release. ‘Falling’ contains new tracks as well as live jam favourites ‘Psycho’ and ‘Bisco’ as if not to dispel their live performance roots, but it’s not hard to imagine when listening to these tracks that it’s note enough to hear them, if you ever get the chance, go to a gig and feel them.

Mumford And Sons
‘Sister’
(Island Records)

There’s something special about this track. As I write this text, the song is still in the studio. That’s right, the band is still recording it! We challenge you to find a more exclusive track. But ‘Sister’ may ring a bell for some fans, seeing as it’s a brand new version of a song that was previously featured as a bonus track on the band's ultra-rare ‘Love Your Ground’ EP. The song was also preformed a capella as an encore at their iTunes Festival show at The Roundhouse. Mumford And Sons fans… you just struck gold.

The Raveonettes
‘Suicide’
(Sony Records)

“I see us as an extremely good rock ‘n’ roll band,” said Sune Rose Wagner, the male half of the Raveonettes duo, in an interview. Take note Kanye, that’s how you do vainglorious boasting… with a dash of humour. We bring you a track from their latest album and, since we would rather not try to compromise the uniqueness the Raveonettes bring by labelling it a single genre, we went to get a second opinion. Here’s what YouTube user ‘lolsockmonkey’ had to say: “Mmm. <3 Good for dancing.”

She Keeps Bees
‘Gimmie’
(Names Records)

What would a Cross Section album be like without a bit of soul, you ask? We don’t know and we’re not going to find out any time soon thanks to this excellent pairing of rough growling guitars matched with lead singer Jessica Larrabee’s strong bluesy voice. With a previous album ‘Nests’ recorded entirely at home, She Keeps Bees knows how to pack a wallop while keeping it stark. “Give it to me daddy, work me like my back ain’t got no bone.” she croons. Wow… graphic.

Dj Mix Podcast Series - Keyboard Choir

Right then, this week we hand your eardrums over to the very capable Keyboard Choir, to soothe and excite. Keyboard Choir formed in 1994, using a traditional band setup to perform using purely electronic sources and ‘found sounds’. The result is a massively enjoyable concoction of crafted but organic-sounding electronica, enjoyed by – amongst many others – musical genius Brian Eno. A seal of approval if ever there was one.

Quite simply, KC’s exclusive mix is rammed to the rafters with marvellous electronica, no messing, confirmed by a quick glance at the tracklist – Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert, Clark, Mr Oizo, Gang Gang Dance… and not just tracks picked at random, mind – Keyboard Choir have obviously got their heads screwed on right, having picked some absolute belters, including the skittish brilliance of Mr Oizo’s ‘Erruer Jean’ and the best track by far (‘A New Error) from the Moderat album.

There are also some fine tracks from the Choir themselves – blending in perfectly with business at hand – taken from their acclaimed ‘Mizen Head To Gascanane Sound’ album and ‘Electrical Unity’ EP.

There’s even a rather nifty Little Boots track. BUT WAIT, sit down, it’s ok – it’s a remix. And a good one at that, undertaken by Kid Who. Phew.

To conclude: Aphex, Vibert, Lindstrom, Moderat and more all in the same 30 mins? Oh, go on then, if you must. And turn it up while you’re there.
The Brute Chorus - The Brute chorus

Listen to The Brute Chorus's self titled debut here on ClashMusic ahead of it's 19th October release.

Read ClashMusic's review of the album, which we called "Storming stuff', HERE.

The band's James Steel has also supplied a track by track guide to the album to give some insight into the twelve songs, enjoy:

1. Hercules
Is one of my favourite songs on the album. It's a spoken word song and opens this record with an urgent rat tat tat on a wood block sounding like the debt collector’s final brass knuckled rap on a door, then the setting of the scene as in Greek tragedy: Hercules meets Samson and Delilah to compare hair cuts etc. It's our take on a New Orlean’s rhythm track intended to sound like The Cramps playing in Lee Dorsey’s Coalmine.

2. She Was Always Cool
This is the oldest Brute song on the record and usually kicks off our live shows. It was written as I toured Australia without a guitar hence the lack of instrumentation at the beginning. I wrote it to the sound of my own hand claps after a close encounter with a waitress in Byron Bay.

3. Send Me A Message
I wrote this at Christmas time last year and the lyrics are borrowed from various folk tales, blues songs and Silent Night '...laid me in a stable bare, my cattle we a-lo-ing'. This is the point where the Brute Choir arrive on the album and you can really feel the buzz in the room.

4. Grow Fins
This is one of our most popular songs at gigs. It's a fanciful tale about a flood and being rescued by a woman and growing fins. Inspired by She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain and Captain Beefheart. It's supposed to be silly.

5. Nebuchadnezzar
I saw Arthur Boyd’s amazing painting of Nebuchadnezzar On Fire Falling Over A Waterfall in Australia. The song has more spooked out chants from the choir as a man tells of imagining throwing himself in to a river and rising back up as a golden god. Not a bad idea!

6. Blind Ulysses
The first ballad of the set burns slowly over a bed of throbbing detuned guitars. Only the girls of the choir are left to add siren-like backing vocals, we don't get to play this very often and I was worried it wouldn't work. If you listen carefully to the recording, i the silence after the song someone says 'Fucking A!'. I heard it on the night and knew we'd got it right.

7. Love’s Chains
The second and last ballad of the record was inspired by the opening passages of Ovid’s Metamorphoses and it uses the flood analogy once again to describe the union of two people in a changing and uncertain world. I'd just got engaged when I wrote this.

8. The Cuckoo & The Stolen Heart
Tigs (Chew Lips) and Mat Martin (The Hobopop Collective) joined us on stage for this. It's one of our most popular songs live but because Tigs is busy with Chew Lips we rarely get to play it. On the last note I fell over the monitor behind me. Everyone cheered but I was pretty embarassed. Lots of people took pictures. I just got up and tried to act like nothing had happened and get on with the next song. I fall over all the time on stage but because of the pressure of this gig it felt a lot worse than it was. You can't even hear it.

9. All The Pilgrims
This was the first single from the album to be released and is a kind of psychobilly thing. It's got this great keyboard drone from Nick and a throbbing Damned style bass groove from Dave. It's about hero worship mixed with religious imagery and is a song of devotion to a girl who, with her bob hair cut, looks like Joan of Arc. One of the first songs we did where I don't play an instrument and it was a real lesson for me in how to be a front man.

10. Chateau
Our first single and another of my favourites. I love stamping around to this on stage. It's great because the dynamics really move with this song and one minute I'm screaming my throat out, the next I'm whispering to a wolf on the other side of the door.

11. The Ransom
Our thin veil of a slick well-produced recording is well and truly dropped on this song. I fluffed the opening lines and had to stop the band. The crowd cheer their support and we got our act together once again for a garage rock blaster complete with ya ya’s, swirling synthesizers and fuzzed out harmonica. We decided to keep the mistake in. We're human afterall and we want people to know it. Nobody's perfect so why pretend?

12. I’m Gonna Shake Your Treehouse Down
The last song has a Spector-beat feel and Matt's favourite band The Jesus and Mary Chain are invoked for this song about a man visited by another man’s wife one hot night. He takes her in just before another deluge breaks, the power fails, and the lightning flashes about. It's intended as a warning to all those who don’t look after the things they hold dear not a glorification of fucking another person's wife. Trust me... don't even go there.

- - -

Dj Mix Podcast Series - Kippi Kaninus

This week’s mix comes from enigmatic electronica/folky experimentalist Kippi Kaninus. Hailing from Iceland, Kippi has been quietly crafting his weird and wonderful tunes since 2001, and describes his music as “fast, slow, theatrical, absurd, beaty, cheerful”. It is all of those things and much more. In fact, it’s a far better example of folktronica – as in the literal blending of traditional folk music and electronica – than pretty much anyone else who’s been labelled as such, due to Kippi’s fascinating and accomplished use of Gamelan sounds, offbeat electronica rhythms, drones and Mum-like harmonies.

Kippi’s mix for Clash reflects the eclectic influences and sounds which have shaped his music. Quite simply, you won’t have heard anything like this before. Combining heavy percussion with Gamelan sounds, electronic textures, folk, Ennio Morricone seventies soundtracks and dark-as-you-like samples, this is a truly unique mix…

5 October marks Kippi’s UK debut proper, with the release of his marvellous and beautiful album ‘Happens Secretly’ – put out on a limited release in 2005, but not able to be enjoyed fully in the UK until now. Read ClashMusic's review of 'Happens Secretly' HERE.

With previous and planned releases on much-respected dub and grime labels Tectonic, Earwax and Senseless, Jack Sparrow has been steadily making an impact on the scene since his debut in 2007 – a pattern which looks set to continue with the release of his anticipated Tectonic label debut, set to drop in 2010.

As a precursor to this album, Sparrow presents an exclusive ‘roots of influence’ mix for Clash, giving a glimpse into his own musical psyche while simultaneously providing a fine soundtrack for all.

Doing exactly what it promises, the ‘roots of influence’ mix showcases some timeless hip hop, dubstep and jungle tracks that have shaped Sparrow’s own impressive tech-dub output, as well as the direction of countless other players in countless scenes.

Featured artists include Burial, Leftfield, Photek Plastikman (a Richie Hawtin alias) and the mighty LFO, whose marvellous self-titled track still sounds ace and provides a fine electronica counterpoint to the entrancing heavy beats and bass of the rest of the mix.
