American duo YACHT have confirmed details of their fifth album ‘Shangri-La’.

YACHT are not like other groups. Taking their name from an alternative school in Portland, the duo mix out-there philosophy with forward thinking electro-rock. Growing in stature, DFA signed the group back in 2008.

Releasing their debut album for the label, ‘See Mystery Lights’ was an overwhelming artistic success. Possibly the best thing YACHT have released, it came just at the right time for the American group.

Touring the world, YACHT were exposed to new influences which they are channelling into their second album for DFA. The band’s fifth album overall, it finds them breaking new ground after almost a decade together.

Titled ‘Shangri-La’ the album was produced, mixed, recorded, and performed by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans. The duo were assisted by frequent collaborator Bobby Birdman, with YACHT basing themselves in Los Angeles.

As usual, there is much more to a YACHT release than just music. Impossible to paraphrase, here’s a direct quote from the press release…

Shangri-La argues that “Paradise is kinetic potential, a latency within us that has been eaten alive by time.” In line with the existing emphasis on self-empowerment in the YACHT philosophy, YACHT’s idea of “Utopia” is personal. YACHT believes that the only real sustainable paradise is in our minds, and hence creative output can be a tangible piece of the Utopia within each individual. Shangri-La literally is YACHT’s Utopia, a place made of songs.
