Otis Redding

Giant of Soul music

Soul singer Otis Redding virtually defined the Southern Soul genre, generating hit after hit for the Stax / Volt labels. His rootsy vocals mixed with laid back rhythms of the MGs provided the perfect template for 60s soul. He wrote "Respect", and stole "Satisfaction" away from the Stones, before dying in a plane crash in 1967. Posthumous hit "(Sitting On) The Dock Of The Bay" became his marker, a huge transatlantic success and no less than the man deserved.
