Norman Whitfield

Motown Producer

When Norman Whitfield began acting as a Motown producer in the mid 60s, he knew little of what lay in front of him. Under his guidance, groups such as The Temptations veered towards the psychedelic sound, with rock and funk influences appearing in the previously pop orientated label's output. Pivotal in securing Motown's first Grammy, he was one of the main producers at the label from 1966 until 1974 during which time the label became he voice of inner city youth with its new, socially, conscious sound. His own Whitfield label wasn't quite as successful, and although the producer remained in the music industry he never again scaled the commercial heights of his Motown era.
