Marlena Shaw

Women Of The Ghetto

Born into a musical family Marlena Shaw appeared at the Apollo in New York when still a child. Her mother forbid her from entering the music industry, and Shaw had five children before embarking on a career. After losing out in a Columbia Records audition Shaw eventually signed with Chess Records. After a few hit records the singer moved to Blue Note where she became the first female artist on the label. Still working and recording Marlena Shaw remains a captivating performer.
