Kill It Kid

Bath-formed blues-touched indie newcomers

Kill It Kid are Richard Jones (violins/backing vocals), Adam Timmins (bass guitar/guitars), Stephanie Ward (vocals/piano), Marc Jones (drums/percussion) and Chris Turpin (vocals/guitars/harmonica). MYSPACE Bath five-piece Kill It Kid is a band set for great things in 2009. For want of an easy comparison, a blend of Tom Waits, Antony Hegarty and The Raconteurs has been mentioned. But Kill It Kid sound very much their own - an impassioned, adventurous slant on blues and dark pop through powerful songs, gorgeous two-part vocals and a penchant for down-home storytelling. Kill It Kid formed through old musical friends and projects at Bath Spa University. Vocalist Chris Turpin began performing solo, occasionally joined by drummer Marc Jones and bassist Adam Timmins. Through their social circles at Uni, the band formed in February 2008, debuting in Bath to rapturous acclaim. This prompted visiting lecturer John Parish (PJ Harvey, The Eels) to select Kill It Kid as a band to record with, based on the recommendation of Chris’s college tutor. The EP and live show immediately attracted One Little Indian Records, who signed the band in May 2008, three months after the band formed. The dual vocals of Chris Turpin and Stephanie Ward, recalling a brooding Anthony Hegarty, singing whiskey-soaked lullabies to Alison Krauss. Combine this with forceful strings and down-home percussion, and Kill It Kid is a band crafting mature melodies wise beyond their years. Since, Kill It Kid have soft-released their Parrish-produced EP through One Little Indian, and have flown off to Seattle to record their debut with Ryan Hadlock (Johnny Flynn, Foo Fighters, Regina Spektor) at his studio, the same space Fleet Foxes recorded their eponymous album. Already they have supported Ipso Facto, The Virgins, Phoebe Killdear from Nouvelle Vague and Pete and the Pirates. An album is due out later in the year, with two singles beforehand. The first, 'Send Me An Angel Down', a gorgeous indie-folk novella, is out on May 18th. Photo: Tom Barnes
