Joe Strummer

Former front man of The Clash

Former front man of The Clash, Joe Strummer was a pub rocker converted by Punk into a radicalised preacher, the figurehead of the movement alongside Johnny Rotten. After Punk burnt itself out The Clash continued to grow, their more straight forward numbers winning over the US stadium circuit before they took a left turn into experimentation, resulting in the triple Sandanista album with it's latin, reggae and hip hop influences. Following Mick Jones' depature, Strummer led a half arsed version of the group before doing the decent thing and calling time on the band. After some intial solo work Strummer disappeared from view before resurfacing revitalised with The Mescaleros, who he went onto tour with right up until his untimely death in December 2002.
