J Dilla

J Dilla, the Detroit beats producer cited by so many as a modern inspiration. Dilla’s seriously wonky beats have travelled far fast; from the local Michigan-dwelling Dabrye to artists well outside hip-hop - such as Mark Pritchard’s Harmonic 313 project - and onto new-school beat-mongers such as LA’s Flying Lotus and Glasgow’s Rustie and Hudson Mohawke. Dilla died in February 2006 from TTP, a rare blood disease, and possibly Lupus. His memory clearly lives on in his music, rippling constantly in samples and spirit.
